MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
June 2009

What a great kickoff to the Reunion Music Society's (RMS) 2009 season with the April NOVA-Annandale Symphony Orchestra concert which was to many seemed to be the best performance ever. What a way to celebrate the orchestra's 15th anniversary! The works were of high caliber; the players and audience equally enjoyed the results. The one Annandale Brass Ensemble concert in April was also of high quality.

The RMS Board of Directors is busy making additional plans for this year and next. We will offer a "Women in Jazz" concert on June 28. Let your friends, family and jazz aficionados know about this concert which will feature young vocalists with heritages from Afghanistan, Colombia and Peru. They will be playing jazz standards, classics and some original compositions. Additionally, for early 2010 we are planning a series of Ellington music concerts at various venues, including churches.

RMS is working to upgrade its website and increase marketing efforts. We hope to obtain additional funding from individuals and businesses to help support our offering a variety of musical genres to our loyal audience. Please let me know if you have any suggestions as to where RMS can secure funds. We receive operational support grants from the Arts Council of Fairfax County, but County funds are being cut back. I am sure you have a great appreciation for keeping the arts strong in the Annandale area and will actively promote our symphonic, brass and jazz concerts. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you at our concerts on the NVCC-Annandale campus and at various Fairfax County parks this summer.

Pat Sawhney, President

RMS GRANTED DISTINCTIVE AWARDS ON APRIL 17, 2009

On the occasion of the NOVA-Symphony Orchestra’s 15th anniversary the Reunion Music Society (RMS) granted the following awards. Richardson-Watkins Founders Awards recognizing members of the community who have contributed greatly through the years to the success of our unique programs were made to The Annandale Florist, Inc., Norman Johnston and Bruce Mann. For many years the civic minded Sherfey family, owners of Annandale Florist, has provided complimentary flower arrangements for our symphony orchestra concerts. The florist willingly displays concert advertisements in the shop's front window located in downtown Annandale. Norman Johnston is a long-time volunteer and one of the founding members of the RMS. He is the Society's graphic artist, actively seeks paid advertising, and has financially underwritten concerts. Bruce Mann, Dean of Liberal Arts on the NVCC's Annandale campus, serves as the college's liaison to the RMS. He also oversees music courses involving college students and members of the NOVA-Annandale Symphony Orchestra. Bruce coordinates the smooth scheduling of concerts and rehearsals both on and off campus ensuring that concerts get publicity on campus and in the media.

Orchestra/Players Choice Awards were given to two musicians who have made an enduring affect on the outstanding success and development of the Symphony Orchestra. Selected by their peers in the Orchestra Claiborne ("Clai") T. Richardson II and Jody Smalley were honored. Contributing his time for the past 15 years as the percussion and timpani section leader "Clai" leads and teaches several budding musicians who have recently graduated from high school. In addition to playing the violin for the past 15 years Jody serves as the vice president of the symphony orchestra's board of directors and works with the librarian to ensure that the musicians have the appropriate music scores for rehearsals and concerts.
