RMS GRANTED DISTINCTIVE AWARDS ON APRIL 16, 2010
At a reception prior to the Symphony Orchestra’s spring concert, RMS presented five awards. Richardson-Watkins Founders Awards, recognizing members of the community who have contributed greatly to the success of our unique programs, were made to Campbell & Ferrara Nurseries, Inc., Steven Metzger, and Dr. Barbara Saperstone. For many years, Campbell & Ferrara’s Garden Manager, Karen Stay, has made sure that complimentary plants and greenery were placed in the NOVA Cultural Center’s theater lobby during our concerts. Steve Metzger has hosted RMS’ website for years, absorbing the costs of keeping it up to date. Dr. Barbara Saperstone, Provost of NOVA’s Annandale Campus, has supported RMS in many ways for over a decade, including furnishing needed resources for the NOVA-Annandale Symphony Orchestra.
Two musicians in the NOVA-Annandale Symphony Orchestra were given Orchestra/Players Choice Awards for their enduring impact on the success and development of the orchestra. Selected by their peers in the orchestra, Nancy McKinless and Rolland ("Bucky") Roup were recognized. In addition to being a dedicated violinist, Nancy has served for many years as the orchestra’s librarian, ensuring that the musicians have the appropriate music scores for rehearsals and concerts. "Bucky" devotes many hours to stage management in addition to playing the violin in the orchestra. He carefully coordinates logistical matters with the orchestra’s music director and with the NOVA Cultural Center’s technical staff.
